What do you get when the world’s tallest man
and shortest woman meet for a photo shoot at the Egyptian pyramids? Cute pics,
that’s what.
The idea for
bringing the two together was conceived by the Egyptian tourism promotion
board. The photos are garnering a significant amount of attention. And we can
see why.
Recently 24-year-old Jyoti Amge from India met 35-year-old
Sultan Kosen from Turkey. Amge is just over 2-feet tall; while Kosen stands at
a staggering 8’1″.
Amge is about the size of one of his shoes. To her, Kosen
must resemble a skyscraper. Talk about awkward. Short girls always feel this
around tall folks, but none more so than Amge.
Her small hight was caused by a form of
dwarfism called achondroplasia. This is a genetic disorder that results in
short bone growth and disproportionate limbs. She was named the world’s
shortest woman at the age of 18 when she weighed just 11 pounds.
Both Amge
and Kosen must have many everyday items such as clothing, plates, dishes,
utensils customized for their sizes. Like Amge, Kosen’s hight was caused by
something called pituitary gigantism. This is where the pituitary gland
produces too much growth hormone. This has caused his excessive height and body
growth.
Kosen was declared the
world’s tallest man back in 2001 by the Guinness Book of World Records. He was
the first person to be measured for this distinction in over 20 years. He also
holds the record for the largest hands. From wrist to the tip of his middle
finger, the distance measures an incredible 11.2 inches.
